Dashavatara refers to the ten primary avatars of Vishnu, the Hindu god of preservation. Vishnu is said to descend in form of an avatar to restore cosmic order. The word Dashavatara derives from daśa, meaning ‘ten’, and avatar, roughly equivalent to ‘incarnation’.

This piece is ideal for a smaller group that is still developing, although it would work well for a larger ensemble by doubling mallet parts and/or adding auxiliary percussion.  Cymbal parts can also be beefed up and split to accommodate larger cymbal lines.  Modifying the bass drum part for more (or even less) bass drums would be very easy to do as well.
